Google Business Profile for Teesside industrial and trade firms
Most advice about business profiles is written for restaurants and dentists. A fabrication shop on Riverside Park or a maintenance contractor working across Wilton has a different job to do with the same tool.
The signals behind a local result
Signals Google states it ranks local results on: relevance, distance, prominence.
SOURCEDPrimary category per profile. It carries more weight than any other single field.
MECHANISMInfluence a profile has on scoring inside a procurement portal.
MECHANISMSource for the three signals: Google Business Profile Help, "How to improve your local ranking on Google", read July 2026. The other two describe how the system behaves and are tagged accordingly.
What a profile is genuinely worth to a trade firm
Industrial firms usually dismiss business profiles, and the dismissal is half right. No procurement lead awards a pipework package off a map pack.
The value sits somewhere less obvious. A profile is a free, high visibility record of your trading name, address, phone number and category, controlled by you and checkable by anyone.
That matters for the corroboration problem described in the fabricator retrieval guide. Independent records that agree with your website raise confidence in every claim you make.
It also catches a specific kind of search. Someone new to the area looking for a machine shop, a fabricator or a welding contractor near a site often searches exactly that way, and a contractor stuck on a shutdown searches that way too.
Deciding how to list an estate unit
Google draws a hard line between a business customers visit and a business that travels to customers. Choose deliberately rather than by default.
- Show the address if buyers, auditors, hauliers or inspectors come to your unit. A fabrication shop taking deliveries and hosting factory acceptance tests is a visited premises.
- Hide the address and set a service area if all work happens on client sites. Site services, scaffolding, industrial cleaning and mobile maintenance firms fit this pattern.
- Never invent a second location. A virtual office in another town to appear closer to buyers there is a suspension risk and a wasted month.
Distance from the searcher is one of the three stated signals and you cannot control it. A firm in Billingham and a firm in Guisborough are competing on partly different searches whatever either of them does.
What to fill in and how
Complete the profile once, properly, and it needs very little afterwards. The fields below do most of the work.
- Primary category. Name what you are. A firm choosing a broad manufacturer category over a specific fabricator or engineering category loses relevance for the searches it wants.
- Services. List each process separately using the words buyers use, matching the pages on your site. Vagueness here wastes the largest free text field you get.
- Description. State plainly what you make, for which sectors, to which standards and where. This is the same liftable sentence discipline that assistants reward.
- Hours and phone. Publish hours somebody actually answers and a number that reaches a person. Industrial buyers ring, and a shutdown enquiry does not leave a voicemail twice.
- Photographs of the shop floor. Plant, bays, cranes and finished work tell a technical buyer more in five seconds than a page of copy. This is one of the few places a photograph earns its place.
Keep the trading name identical everywhere. A profile saying one name, a website saying another and Companies House saying a third splits your evidence three ways.
What a profile will not do for you
A business profile ranks a listing. It does not rank the pages that win technical work.
MECHANISM Map results and ordinary search results are separate surfaces with separate logic. A buyer searching for a specific process, alloy or standard sees pages rather than a map, and no profile field competes for that.
Treat the profile as a few hours of foundation work. The capability pages described in the capability statement guide are what actually answer a specialist search.
The general local search picture, including proximity and the map pack, sits on the local SEO page. This cluster is indexed on the Teesside industrial guide.
Frequently asked questions
We sell to other businesses, so is a business profile worth the effort?
Worth a few hours rather than a campaign. A profile settles who and where you are for anyone checking you, and it is the cheapest corroboration of your trading details available. Expecting it to generate industrial enquiries on its own is where firms are disappointed.
Should our unit on an industrial estate be listed as a physical address?
List the address if buyers, hauliers or auditors ever come to you. Hide it and declare a service area if you work entirely on client sites and nobody visits your unit. Middlesbrough, Stockton, Redcar, Billingham and Hartlepool are sensible service area entries for a firm covering Teesside.
Nobody in procurement leaves reviews. Does that sink us?
It slows one signal without stopping the rest. Business buyers rarely review suppliers publicly, so most industrial profiles carry very few. Asking a long standing contact for an honest sentence is reasonable, and buying or writing reviews is not.
Which category should a fabrication or engineering firm choose?
Pick the primary category that names what you actually are rather than the widest one available. The primary category carries the most weight of any single field on the profile. Add secondary categories for genuine additional capabilities.
Will a business profile help us win a tender?
Not directly, because tender scoring happens inside a procurement portal rather than on a map. It helps at the earlier stage where a buyer is deciding who to invite. A profile that agrees with your website and your Companies House record makes you look like a real, findable firm.
Getting the foundation right
Setting a profile up properly takes an afternoon and rarely needs paying for. Knowing whether it is the right afternoon takes a conversation.
