CHART MBR / SEC 20 / LOCAL SEARCH
Local SEO in Middlesbrough
The map pack runs on different rules from the ordinary results below it. Understanding which of those rules you can move and which are fixed by geography saves a great deal of wasted money.
What local results are ranked on
Signals Google states it ranks local results on: relevance, distance, prominence.
SOURCEDPrimary category per profile. It carries the most weight by far.
MECHANISMControl you have over how far the searcher is standing from you.
MECHANISMSource for the three signals: Google Business Profile Help, "How to improve your local ranking on Google", read July 2026. The other two figures describe how the system works. That is what the MECHANISM tag means.
Proximity is the signal you cannot buy
Local results are computed relative to where the search happens. Someone searching from Linthorpe and someone searching from Ormesby can get materially different map packs for identical wording.
This is why comparing your position with a competitor's is unreliable unless you are both standing in the same place. Two people can honestly report different rankings for the same term on the same day.
It also sets a realistic goal. You are not trying to top the map pack for all of Teesside, a thing that does not exist. You are trying to be the obvious answer within the radius your business actually serves.
The levers that are genuinely yours
- Category accuracy. The primary category is the single biggest profile lever. Precision beats breadth.
- Completeness. Hours, service areas, attributes, a real description, and services listed individually rather than as one paragraph.
- Consistent details across the web. Name, address and phone number matching everywhere they appear, including old directory entries you have forgotten about.
- The landing page behind the profile. A profile that points at a generic homepage wastes the click. Point it at the page about the thing being searched for.
- Photographs of your actual premises and work. Stock imagery does nothing here.
None of these are clever. All of them are commonly left half done. That is why they are worth doing properly.
If you go to the customer rather than the reverse
Plenty of Teesside businesses work on client sites: maintenance contractors, inspection firms, mobile plant and industrial services. Google has a specific configuration for this, the service area business, and it is the correct one to use.
Set it up honestly and it hides your street address while letting you declare the areas you cover. Set it up dishonestly, with invented branch locations across the region, and you risk the profile entirely.
Recovery from a suspension is slow and it is entirely avoidable.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my competitor outrank me in the map pack when my business is better known?
Proximity to the searcher is one of the strongest signals in local results and not something either of you controls. If their premises sit closer to where the search happens, they will often appear ahead of you for that search regardless of reputation. The lever you do control is everything else: category accuracy, completeness, and the strength of the matching page on your site.
I work across Teesside from one unit. Should I hide my address?
Serving customers at their site rather than yours makes Google's service area business setting the correct configuration; it does hide the street address publicly. It is a legitimate setting, not a workaround. Using it while genuinely operating from that unit is fine; inventing additional locations you do not occupy is the thing that gets profiles suspended.
Does a Google Business Profile help if my buyers are procurement teams, not the public?
It helps less than it would a trade counter or a restaurant; that is worth saying plainly. Industrial procurement rarely starts in the map pack. A complete and accurate profile still matters as a strong corroborating signal about who you are and where you operate, feeding both ordinary search results and AI assistants.
How many categories should I select?
One primary category chosen as precisely as the list allows, then only the secondary categories that genuinely describe what you do. The primary category carries far more weight than the others. Padding the list with loosely related options tends to dilute relevance rather than broaden reach.
Can you get my profile to the top of the map pack?
No; I would not claim it. The map pack ranks on relevance, distance and prominence, and distance in particular is fixed by where you are and where the searcher is. What I can do is make sure nothing under your control is holding the profile back and that the page it points to actually earns the click.
Where to start
Local profile work sits inside the ongoing retainer rather than being sold separately because on its own it rarely justifies an engagement.
Or start with the £400 Sprint to see where you currently stand.
