Word of mouth and search for Teesside firms

Teesside industry has run on relationships and repeat contracts for generations. That still wins most of the work today. The question worth asking is what a referred buyer does in the ten minutes before ringing you.

The two channels

How work reaches a Teesside firm

Channels most industrial firms here rely on: repeat contracts and personal referral.

Referrals a firm receives from a buyer who has never heard of anyone who knows it.

MECHANISM

These describe how the two channels behave rather than measuring any firm's mix. No survey of Teesside referral rates appears on this page because I hold none. Estimating one would be exactly the practice this site argues against.

Why referral worked

The case for word of mouth is a strong one

Referral converts better than any other channel and costs nothing to run. A buyer arriving on a recommendation from a trusted engineer has already skipped most of the evaluation a stranger would insist on.

Teesside amplifies that. The industrial base is dense and the sectors overlap heavily. People move between the plants, the contractors and the supply chain while keeping their contacts.

Nothing on this page argues against that. A firm with a strong reputation on the river holds an asset no amount of content buys.

The argument is narrower. Referral has a reach limit. That limit has moved in the last few years.

What changed

Four changes to who is doing the buying

The mechanism of referral has not changed. The population of buyers has.

  • Buyers arrive without a contact book. Developers and tier one contractors entering the region for offshore wind, decarbonisation and freeport projects have no local relationships to draw on. Their first move is a search or an assistant.
  • The people who knew you retire or move. A referral network is held in individuals. Each departure quietly removes a route into your order book and nothing announces it.
  • Procurement moved into portals. Supplier lists get built by somebody researching who exists before any invitation goes out. That research happens online.
  • Buyers verify before they call. Even a warm referral gets looked up. The check takes minutes and it happens whether you have prepared for it or not.

Each change moves the same way. More of the decision happens before anyone speaks to you.

Protecting a referral

What happens between the recommendation and the call

Picture the buyer your best customer just recommended you to. They open your website before they dial. Some of them ask an assistant about you as well.

Three outcomes follow from that minute.

  • A page stating plainly what you make, to which standards and for which sectors confirms the recommendation.
  • A thin or dated site weakens it and puts the buyer back into comparison mode.
  • A site saying nothing specific leaves them ringing the next name on the list.

MECHANISM This is where search work pays for firms that swear they do not need it. The pages are not there to find new buyers. They are there to survive the check that every referred buyer already runs.

The same pages do both jobs. Nothing separate is needed for the referred buyer and the searching one.

Limits and honesty

When word of mouth on its own is still enough

Some firms genuinely do not need this. A shop running at capacity for two long standing customers, with no growth plan and no succession question, gains very little from search work.

Name the real risk in that position. Concentration is the exposure rather than visibility. Losing one of two customers is a bigger event than losing a search ranking.

The calculation changes with any of three things. Wanting to grow, wanting to diversify away from one sector, or wanting to sell the business eventually all make a discoverable firm worth more than an invisible one.

Decide on that basis rather than on whether search feels relevant to your trade.

Starting sensibly

How to add search without abandoning what works

Keep doing everything that currently wins work. Search is additive here and treating it as a replacement is how firms waste money on it.

Start with the look-up. Make sure the pages a referred buyer lands on state your processes, materials, approvals and sectors in plain terms. The capability statement guide covers that groundwork block by block.

Then check whether you are findable by somebody with no referral at all. The diagnostic guide covers that in order. The Teesside industrial guide indexes the rest of this cluster.

Questions asked about this

Frequently asked questions

We have never needed a website. Why would that change now?

Referral works while the people referring you stay in post and the buyers stay local. Offshore wind, decarbonisation and freeport activity bring in contractors with no Teesside contact book. Those buyers search first and never see a firm that is invisible to search.

Does search work actually damage a referral relationship?

It supports one. A referred buyer almost always looks you up before ringing. A thin or dated site undercuts the recommendation somebody just made for you.

Our order book is full. Is there any point doing this?

A full order book is the cheapest time to start and the easiest time to skip. Search work compounds slowly rather than switching on. Starting while busy means the pipeline exists when a contract ends.

Is word of mouth ever genuinely enough on its own?

Yes, for some firms, and pretending otherwise would sell you something you do not need. A shop working at capacity for two long standing customers with no growth ambition has little to gain here. The risk in that position is concentration rather than visibility.

What is the smallest useful thing we could do first?

Look yourself up the way a referred buyer would and write down what you find. Check what your site says about the processes you actually sell and what an assistant says about firms like yours. That hour tells you whether anything else is worth paying for.
